Windows 11 Auto-Repair Tool: Quick Machine Recovery Arrives. Microsoft introduces QMR, a new tool for Windows 11 that automatically fixes startup issues without manual intervention. Initially available for Windows Insiders, this feature promises faster recovery and less frustration.
Windows 11 Gets a Self-Repair Tool for Startup Issues
Microsoft is working to prevent another widespread PC outage like the one caused by a faulty antivirus update from CrowdStrike. The company has announced a new feature called Quick Machine Recovery, designed to automatically repair Windows 11 when the system fails to boot properly.
What Is Quick Machine Recovery?
Quick Machine Recovery is a new option integrated into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)—the screen that appears when your PC can’t start normally. This tool is currently in beta and available only to members of the Windows Insider Program, but a wider rollout is expected soon.

How Does It Work?
According to Microsoft, “With QMR, when a widespread issue prevents devices from booting correctly, Microsoft can deploy targeted fixes directly through the recovery environment. This automates the repair process and helps users return to productivity quickly without complex manual steps.”
If a new driver, configuration change, or update stops your PC from starting, Windows 11 will enter recovery mode and launch QMR automatically. It will then:
- Connect to the internet (activating Wi-Fi if necessary)
- Send diagnostic data to Microsoft
- Receive targeted fixes (such as uninstalling a problematic driver or update)

A Welcome Improvement
This smart recovery approach aims to reduce downtime and user frustration significantly. By eliminating the need for technical troubleshooting, QMR brings a more seamless and reliable recovery process to everyday users.
